TRA Importation of Goods Procedures (Taratibu za Kuingiza Bidhaa Nchini)

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) was established by Act of Parliament No. 11 of 1995, and started its operations on 1st July 1996. In carrying out its statutory functions, TRA is regulated by law, and is responsible for administering impartially various taxes of the Central Government.

Identity

Import refers to the importation of goods and services brought into Tanzania from foreign countries. Import procedures are required to be followed for the removal of goods from customs control in accordance with the East African Community Customs Management Act of 2004.

The importation of goods into Tanzania takes place at various stages where the Importer is advised to make a declaration through the agent he or she will appoint for Receiving and Transporting Goods by submitting documents at least 7 days prior to the arrival of the shipping container.

Procedures for processing documents for importing goods into the country

The importer is required to appoint a Licensed Cargo Receiving and Shipping Agency so that he can receive/redeem his goods.

List of Freight Receiving and Shipping Agency

The registration process is done online through the Tanzania Joint Customs System (TANCIS) in the case of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, forms can be filled out before the goods arrive.

Customs and Customs Agents/Importers are required to complete the Declaration and estimate individually through the Tanzania Joint Customs System (TANCIS) in the case of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, and attach other relevant import/confirmation documents at least 7 days prior to the arrival of the goods.

The documentation for importing the product includes.

1. Final Invoice

2. Letter of Approval of the Agent from the Importer

3. Import permits from the Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA, Tanzania Standards Agency(TBS)

4. Tax exemption documents (if any)

5. Packing List

6. Shipping documents, i.e. Port Cargo Receipt Document/Airport Cargo Receipt Document/Cargo Cargo Information transported by road.

7. Information on Cash and Payment Stubs Transported into or Out of the Country

Note:

The Baggage Removal System (TANCIS) will refuse to receive a declaration that is either incomplete electronically or with a limited description through its query system (IQS).
