Uchoraji wa Ramani (Mapping) is the act or operation of making a map or maps. Mapping is more than just rendering; it also getting to know the phenomenon which is to be mapped. That’s why mapping is not an easy action
A map is a symbolic depiction of interrelationships, commonly spatial, between things within a space. A map may be annotated with text and graphics. Like any graphic, a map may be fixed to paper or other durable media, or may be displayed on a transitory medium such as a computer screen.
Some maps change interactively. Although maps are commonly used to depict geographic elements, they may represent any space, real or fictional. The subject being mapped may be two-dimensional such as Earth’s surface, three-dimensional such as Earth’s interior, or from an abstract space of any dimension.
Guiding questions to ask when considering a mapping project
1. Why do we want to make a map?
2. What story will the map tell?
3. Who do we want to show it to?
4. Do we have legal titling to the land?
5. What are the boundaries? Do we know what they are, and are they agreed upon?
6. What technology and skills do we already have? And what do we need training and support with?
7. What is the landscape geography like?
8. How many communities are there, and how are they distributed? What is the population?
