WHAT IS TIN NUMBER?

Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a unique number issued by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to every taxpayer. In the past, you had to go to TRA offices and stand in long queues, but now you can do everything from home via your phone or computer.

Why Do You Need a TIN Number?

Importance of TIN Number. TIN is not just for paying taxes; it is an important economic identifier in Tanzania. Here are some of its benefits:

Registering a Business – You cannot obtain a Business License without a TIN number.
Owning a Car/Motorcycle – Registration of fire engines requires the owner’s TIN number.
Getting a Driver’s License – It is a legal requirement to have a TIN to obtain or renew a license.
Bank Account – Many banks now require a TIN for business or large savings accounts.
Importing Products – All port activities (Import/Export) require this number.

Important Requirement

Currently, to obtain an Individual TIN online, you MUST have a National Identification Number (NIDA). The TRA system is integrated with NIDA to capture your information directly.

Steps to Get a TIN Number Online

Follow these simple steps to complete your registration:

1. Visit to the TRA Website

Open your browser and visit the TRA website (www.tra.go.tz) then look for the section labeled “Online Taxpayer Portal” or go directly to the registration system.

2. Select Registration Type

Click on the “Register New Taxpayer” section. Select “Individual” if you are registering as an individual.

3. Enter NIDA Number

The system will ask you to enter your NIDA number. After entering it, the system will pull your information (Name, Date of Birth, etc.) from the NIDA database.

4. Fill in Additional Information

Although most of the information will be there, you will need to fill in other details such as:

Type of business (if you are opening for business).
Where you live or where your office is located.
Phone number and email address.

5. Upload Attachments

You will be asked to upload a photo or copy of your NIDA ID. Make sure the photo is clear and does not exceed the required size (usually less than 2MB).

5. Submit Application

Verify all your information then click “Submit”. You will receive an Acknowledgement Receipt.

6. Receiving a TIN

After your application is reviewed by TRA systems, you will receive a text message (SMS) or email with your TIN number. You will also be able to download your certificate online.
