TCU Postgraduate Admission Procedure for University Institutions

The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) is a government agency which was established on the 1st July 2005, under the Universities Act, Cap. 346 of the Laws of Tanzania with a legal mandate to recognise, register and accredit universities in Tanzania.

It also regulates local or foreign university-level programmes, coordinates the proper functioning of universities and ensures a harmonised higher education system in the country.

FUNCTIONS OF TCU Tanzania

The TCU implements the National Education Policy through its functions which can be clustered into three major areas:

1. Regulatory Function: Ensures quality assurance by evaluating universities, programmes, and systems. Validates programmes, accredits institutions, and evaluates university awards for use in Tanzania.

2. Advisory Function: Advises the government and public on university education, policy formulation, and international higher education issues.

3. Supportive Function: Coordinates university operations, students’ admissions, and provides training in areas like quality assurance, leadership, entrepreneurship, and resource mobilization.

TCU Postgraduate Admission Procedure for University Institutions

Sections (12) (2) (a) (b) (c) of the Universities Act, Cap. 346 of the Laws of Tanzania, read together with Regulation 31 (2)(3)(4), give the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) the mandate to coordinate admissions to University institutions and standardize the criteria for admission into higher education, this case admission into Postgraduate Training programmes in Tanzania.

(i) The procedure applies to all applicants seeking admissions into Post Graduate Diplomas, Masters and PhD studies in university institutions in Tanzania.

Recognized Admission Pathways

TCU recognizes three postgraduate admission pathways which are:

a) Bachelor’s Degree;

b) Postgraduate Diploma;

c) Masters; and

d) Doctoral studies.

1. TCU Criteria for Admission into Post Graduate Diploma

Applicants under this scheme must fulfill the following conditions:

(i) MUST at least hold a Bachelor’s Degree, Advanced Diploma or its equivalent from a recognized institution of higher education.

Candidates with equivalent qualifications must also possess at least Secondary School Certificates with at least three credits or four passes at ‘O’ Level and/or two principal passes with a total of 4.0
points obtained from two subjects;

(ii) MUST have at least a minimum GPA of 2.0 at a Bachelor degree or Post Graduate Certificate;

(iii) MUST accomplish a minimum of two semesters with 120 credits; and

(iv) The maximum period of study must be in accordance to the university regulations.

2. TCU Criteria for Admission into Master’s Degree

Applicants under this scheme must fulfill the following conditions:

(i) MUST have a minimum GPA of 2.7 at a Bachelor’s Degree or at least a GPA of 4.0 at a Postgraduate Diploma level in related field; OR

(ii) MUST possess an Advanced Diploma with Upper Second class or above, from recognized institution; OR

(iii) MUST possess Professional qualification such as CPA (T), CSP (T), ACCA, CA, CIB, MCIM, CMA certificate) with Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma and

(iv) To qualify for a Master’s degree, a minimum of two semesters with 180 credits will be required;

(v) The maximum period of study must be in accordance to the university regulations.

3. TCU Criteria for Admission into Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree

(i)  Minimum Entry Qualifications into a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme requires an applicant to possess a relevant Master’s Degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from recognized institutions of  higher education;

(ii) For a candidate to qualify for a PhD award, a minimum of six semesters with 540 credits will be required; and

(iii) The maximum period of study must be in accordance to the university regulations.
