Kiswahili (often called Swahili in English) is a Bantu language that originated along the East African coast and is now widely spoken across East and Central Africa.

It is the national and official language of Tanzania and Kenya. It is also widely used in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and parts of Mozambique.

Kiswahili serves as a lingua franca, meaning it enables communication among people with different mother tongues.

The language has a Bantu grammatical structure, with vocabulary influenced by Arabic, as well as English, Portuguese, and Persian, due to historical trade and cultural contact.

It is used in education, government, media, commerce, and daily communication.
