Topic 1: Dhana ya Ramani – Jiografia Na Mazingira Notes Darasa la Nne
A map is a picture – usually a drawing – of the world or its parts or features. It is different from a photograph taken with a camera from an airplane or spacecraft because the cartographer chooses what he wants to show and gives weight to the features he wants to emphasize.
There are many types of maps:
Topographic maps show the shape of the land (for example: oceans , land , mountains , rivers , elevation and depth of the sea )
Population maps show certain characteristics related to the world (for example: history , economy , population distribution in a country, etc.)
A map can follow the shape of the country the map can follow the needs of the reader (a railway route map shows only the line and the sequence of stations without mentioning corners and changes of direction )
Every mapmaker needs to choose how to display his or her own things. For geographic maps, the problem arises from the shape of the earth, which is a sphere, while maps are usually flat sheets of paper .
