Assessment, testing, measurement, and evaluation are important activities in the teaching and learning process

Without them, it would have been very difficult for teachers to track and follow-up their students’ achievement

Assessment – is a systematic, continuous process of monitoring the various pieces of learning to evaluate students achievement and instructional effectiveness with a view to action

By systematic process, means that assessment involves the use of standard tools such as:

  • tests
  • homework assignments
  • class projects
  • portfolio
  • checklists
  • rating scales
  • class presentations, and
  • teacher observations

What is measurement?

Is a process of assigning numbers to individuals or their characteristics according to specified rules.

Involves numerical description of the degree that an individual possess particular attributes/characteristics

What is Evaluation

Is the process of determining the value or worth of something

At classroom level, it can be defined as a systematic process of collecting, analysing and interpreting information/evidence to determine the extent to which pupils are achieving instructional objectives.
