DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CLASSROOM TEACHER

1. He/she shall act as a positive role model for pupils.

2. He/she shall attend all lessons and be punctual.

3. He/she shall be fair, consistent and have high expectations of all pupils.

4. He/she shall use a variety of teaching and learning styles to engage pupils and encourage good behaviour.

5. He/she shall teach all pupils to abide by the Code of Conduct of the school.

6. He/she shall follow school procedures on discipline, rewards and sanctions. The class teacher should ensure that his/her pupils behave very well and act as a role model. This will also involve giving simple punishments to pupils who will misbehave.

7. He/she is responsible to ensure that the class has all the necessary equipment’s needed for effective teaching and learning as well as making the best use of resources available.

8. He/she has to fill in the pupils’ attendance registers on daily basis twice a day; in the morning and in the evening before departure.

9. He/she has to fill in the pupils’ diaries on daily basis. He/she shall have to record in the diaries the important reports needed by the parents and make regular follow up to enhance effective implementation.

10. He/she shall communicate in a clear, respectful and professional way in order to optimize each pupil’s development.

11. He/she has to maintain complete and accurate records of each student’s academic and social growth using school based formative and summative assessments. This will include filling in pupils’ assessment sheets as well as terminal and annual reports.

12. He/she shall recognize the needs of individual pupils and group at large. He/she should offer support as needed using flexible groups and other suitable methods.

13. He/she shall create a learning environment which stimulates learning, promotes excellence and which accepts and acknowledges the needs of students to be both challenged and supported.

14. He/she shall maintain close relationships with parents, communicating on a regular basis.

15. He/she shall maintain professional confidentiality on information about pupils and their families.

16. He/she shall prepare terminal and annual reports on pupils’ progress based on the respective class.

17. He/she shall perform other related duties as assigned by the school head teacher or the academic teacher.
