TANZANIAN CURRENCY

Tanzanian currency is in the form of shillings and cents. The value of one cent is smaller than the value of one shilling.

One shilling is equal to one hundred cents. A cent is mostly observed in writing than its availability in everyday use.

Also, Tanzanian currency with different values are in the form of coins and banknotes.

TANZANIAN COINS

Tanzanian coins have different deniminations. In the circulation there are fifty, one hundred, two hundred and five hundred shillings coins. Tanzanian coins show various features including, faces of presidents, wildlife, historical monuments, and national symbols.

How do you differentiate a one hundred Tanzanian coin from other Tanzanian coins?

Answer

Each coin can be differentiated based on the number and features it contains. For example, the one hundred coin is written 100 on one of its sides. It also shows four running gazelles.

What is the colour of the Tanzanian fifty shillings coin?

Answer

The Tanzanian fifty shillings coin is coated with the gold colour.

Example 3

Which coin has a picture of the first President of Tanzania?

Answer

It is the one hundred shillings coin.

TANZANIAN BANKNOTES

Tanzania has banknotes with different denominations. The value of each banknote is given by a number.

You can tell the difference between one banknote and another by looking at the different marks inscribed on them.

WRITING TANZANIAN CURRENCY IN SHILLINGS AND CENTS

When writing Tanzanian currency in words, begin with its value then shillings.

When writing Tanzanian currency in short form begin with sh or shs, followed by its value.

Also, when writing currency in cents, begin with its value, then cents.

Example l

(a) How many 50 cents are there in I shilling?

(b) Write 500 shillings and 50 cents in short form.

Solution

(a) 100 cents = Ishilling. Since 100 cts = 50 cts + 50 cts and

sh | = 100 cts = 50 cts + 50 cts, it follows that, sh I is the ame as twice 50 cts.

Therefore, there are two 50 cents in

(b) In short form it is written as shs 500 50 cts.

(a) Write shs 700 in words.

(b) Write in short form shs 1200 and 70 cts.

Answer

(a) shs 700 in words is written as seven hundred

(b) shs 1200 and 70 cts is written in short form as shs 1200 70 cts.

ADDITION OF TANZANIAN CURRENCY

Adding currency is the same as adding whole numbers. When adding currency, consider that one shilling is equal to hundred cents.

Steps

1. Add cents: 20 cts + 70 cts = 90 cts, Write 90 in the cents place.

2. Add shillings: shs 500 + shs 380 = shs 880. Write 880 in the shillings place.

Therefore, the answer is shs 880 90 cts.

Example 2

Steps:

1. Add cents: 65 cts + 75 cts = 140 cts.

Regroup 140 cts into sh I and 40 cts.

Write 40 in the cents place and add /shilling to the shillings place.

2. Add shillings:

1 + 4596 + 3987 = sh 8584. Write 8584 in the shillings place.

Therefore, the answer is shs 8584 and 40 cts.

Example 1

Sabina sold two chicks. The first was sold at 33,620 shillings and the second at 22,350 Tanzanian shillings. How much money did Sabina get?

Therefore, Sabina got 55,970 Tanzanian shillings.

Example 2

Mapunda spent 245,950 Tanzanian shillings for buying milk, and 152,850 Tanzanian shillings for transport. How much money did he spend on milk and transport altogether?

Therefore, Mapunda spent 398,800 Tanzanian shillings.

SUBTRACTION OF TANZANIAN CURRENCY

Subtrating Tanzanian currency is done like subtracting whole numbers from right to left.

Example 1

Steps

I. Subtract cents: 95 – 85 = 10 cts. Write 10 cts in the cents place.

2. Subtract shillings: 48965 – 25843 = shs 23122.

Write shs 23122 in the shillings place.

Therefore, the answer is shs 23122 10 cts.

Steps

1. Subtract cents: 85 cts – 40 cts = 45 cts. Write 45 cts in the cents place.

WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING SUBTRACTION OF TANZANIAN CURRENCY

Example 1

Anna had 80,800 Tanzanian shillings. She bought school uniform and exercise books at 20,000 Tanzanian shillings and 17,500 Tanzanian shillings, respectively. What was Anna’s balance?

Anna spent 37500 shillings on buying school uniform and exercise books.Subtract the amount she spent from the amount she had before buying school uniform and exercise books.

Therefore, Anna’s balance was 43,300 Tanzanian shillings.

Example 2

Peter sold one cow for 450,000 shillings on the day of the auction. After the auction, he gave his son shs 215000 for school needs. How much money did Peter remain with?

Peter was left with 235000 Tanzanian shillings.
