Nation-building is the process of creating and strengthening a national identity, political system, economy and society in an independent country after colonialism.
It is an effort to unite citizens of different ethnicities and cultures under a single concept of nationhood, and to build a society based on justice, equality and shared development.
After gaining independence in 1961, Tanganyika faced many social, economic and political challenges.
The colonial system had left behind ethnic divisions, an economy based solely on raw material production, and a society divided along social and class lines.
Nation building involved:
1. To create a national identity that unites all Tanzanians
2. To build a democratic political system
3. To create a self-reliant economy
4. To accelerate social development such as education and health
5. To protect the freedom and dignity of Tanzanians
