Colonialism had a significant impact on changing the course of Tanzanian societies.
In this chapter, you will learn about the concepts of colonialism, soft power and hard power, the origins of colonialism and its spread in Tanzania, the effects of colonialism, and the patriotism and courage of Tanzanians against colonialism.
The skills you will develop will enable you to analyze and appreciate how colonialism transformed Tanzanian societies and understand how Tanzanians struggled to protect their identity and fight for their independence.
THE CONCEPT OF COLONIALISM, SOFT POWER AND HARD POWER
Colonialism is a system of government in which one country rules another by force. The ruling country is called a “colony” and the country being ruled is called a “colony”.
Colonialism had the following main characteristics:
1. Foreign rule without the consent of the natives
2. Exploitation of natural resources
3. Changing the way of life of the natives
4. Using force and intimidation to maintain rule
