NECTA Tanzania has released New NECTA Examination Format for SFNA 2025: Fomati Mpya ya mtihani wa Upimaji Darasa la Nne 2025, New Exam Format Darasa La Nne For SFNA 2025 By NECTA (Fomati Mpya Mtihani Wa Darasa la Nne – SFNA 2025), The Standard Four National Assessment (SFNA) is a formative evaluation which intends to monitor pupils’ learning.
About NECTA
NECTA is a government institution established by Law in 1973 with the responsibility of administering national examinations in Tanzania. Before 1973, all national examinations were administered by the Curriculum and Examinations Section of the Ministry of Education after Mainland Tanzania had pulled out of the East African Examinations Council in 1971.
The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) was established under the Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973 with the responsibility of administering all National Examinations and Assessments in Tanzania. The decision to establish NECTA was a follow-up of an earlier move in which Mainland Tanzania pulled out of the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) in 1971 in order to conduct her own examinations
Standard Four National Assessment (SFNA)
The Standard Four National Assessment (SFNA) is a formative evaluation which intends to monitor pupils’ learning. in order to provide feedback that teachers, students and other educational stakeholders can use to improve teaching and learning. Each subject has an examination format which describes the structure of the examination paper, and the content that the examination paper for that subject has to cover.
NECTA New SFNA Examination Format Overview
The Standard Four National Assessment Format Book has been prepared by the Tanzania Examinations Council in accordance with the requirements of the Education Policy of 2014, 2023 edition and the Improved Curriculum for Primary Education, Grades III to IV, 2023 issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
This book has been prepared to meet the objectives of the curriculum and the improved outlines, which are; developing Reading, Writing, Numeracy and fluent communication skills, developing knowledge, the ability to inquire, design and solve problems, identifying and developing talents, work skills, sports and arts, developing a culture of appreciation and love for work, recognizing and using science and technology, developing knowledge, skills and attitudes to care for the environment, respecting gender equality; and developing the ability to socialize in an inclusive environment.
Implementation Of the New NECTA SFNA FORMAT
The Assessment Formats in this book will be implemented in 2025. This format has been prepared following a five-paragraph structure for each subject which are Introduction, General Objectives, General Competencies, Specific Competencies and Assessment Structure. Similarly, a Weighting Table for each subject is attached at the end of the format for each relevant subject with the aim of showing the percentage weight of each competency being assessed.

The Examination Council (NECTA) believes that this format will enable writers, revisers and teachers to prepare assessment questions that will enable to obtain fair, valid and consistent results. Furthermore, this format book should not be used in any way as a substitute for the relevant subject summaries in the teaching and learning process.
