The region is located in the north-eastern corner of Tanzania. It lays below the equator between latitudes 2 and 4. Longitudinally. The rgional is situated between 35 and 38 east of greenwich.
It has a common border with Kenya in the north and kilimanjaro region in the east. It also shares borders with manyara region in the south of shinyanga and Mara region in the west
Total land area of 34,526 sq.KM of which 955.2 sq.Kms (2.7%) Is covered by water bodies of lake eyasi, manyara and natron.
The region is one of the smallest region’s of Tanzania mainland, it ranks 13th in size and occupies about 3.8% of Tanzania mainland total area of 942,784 sq.KM
