About INEC
In 1991, the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the late Ali Hassan Mwinyi, appointed a Commission under the Chairmanship of the late Chief Justice (Retd) Francis Nyalali.
The purpose of the Commission was to gather public opinion on whether to continue with a single-party system or to have a multi-party system.
Based on the report of the Commission, Article 3(1) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania of 1977 was amended to make Tanzania a multi-party state.
HOW TO BECOME A VOTER
How to Register and Become a Voter (Sifa za Kuandikishwa Kuwa Mpiga Kura). According to Section 9 (1) of the Presidential, Parliamentary and Councillor Elections Act No. 1 of 2024, in order for a person to be registered as a Voter
He/she must meet the following qualifications:
(i) Be a Tanzanian Citizen;
(ii) Be at least 18 years of age; and
(iii) Not have lost his/her qualifications in accordance with the Presidential, Parliamentary and Councilor Elections Act No. 1 of 2024 or any other Act enacted by Parliament.
PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW
After meeting these qualifications, a person must follow the following procedure:
1. You will go to the Voter Registration Centre located near your area of residence.
2. You will introduce yourself to the Assistant Registrar and the Assistant Registrar will ask you questions and fill out a special form
3. You will go to the BVR kit Operator for electronic identification including taking a photograph
4. You will be given a Voter’s card and you are required to verify your names, photograph and other information, if any, if correct and after satisfying yourself you will leave the station.
Get a Lost Voter’s Card
A voter who has lost his/her voting card should follow the following procedure to get another card:-
1. Go to the center where you registered during the Permanent Voters Register Update. This procedure applies if the Update of the Register is ongoing.
2. If a voter has lost his/her voting card and there is no Update of the Register in progress, the voter should go to the Commission Offices with a Police report of the loss of the card (Loss Report) and fill out a special form and the Commission will provide him/her with his/her voter information which will be used as his/her identification.
