TOPIC 5: REFRACTION AND DISPAERSION OF LIGHT – PHYSICS FORM TWO

Refraction: – is the bending of light at the boundary of the two media as it travels from one medium into another of different optical density.

Refraction: -is the process by which the direction of a ray of light changes as it passes from one medium into another of different optical density.

Causes of refraction of light

Refraction of light is caused by the difference in the optical densities of the media in contact.

When the medium in which the light is travelling is changed, the speed of light also changes. This is because different media have different optical densities.

Optical density: is the degree to which a refractive medium retards the transmitted rays of light.

LAWS OF REFRACTION

1. At the point of incident, the incident ray, the normal line and the refracted ray all lie on the same plane.

2.For a particular material, the ratio sin(i) is sin(r) the constant. This constant is called the refractive index (μ) of a material. This law is also referred as Snell’s law of refraction.
