Recognize the concepts of whole, half, quarter, third, and two-third using real objects and ICT tools
Fractions
A fraction is a part of a whole thing. There are different fractions, for example half, quarter, one third and two-third.
Half
An object or shape can be divided into two equal parts. Each part is called one half. One half is written as ½.
Quarter
An object or shape can be divided into four equal parts. Each part is called one quarter. One quarter is written as ¼.
One third
An object can be divided into 3 equal parts. Each part is called one third. One third is written as 1/3.
Two-thirds
A shape can be divided into three equal parts. Two out of the three parts are called two-thirds. Two thirds is written as 2/3. Observe the following examples below.
NB: The shaded parts are called two thirds and it written as 2/3.
One third or 1/3
When we divide a whole into 3 equal parts we call each part a third or 1/3.
