THE PASSAGE
One market day, Baraka helped his grandmother arrange tomatoes on a wooden table. While others shouted prices, he noticed a man buying salt without bargaining. That was strange because everyone in the village bargained, even for matches.
The man paid quickly using very clean notes, yet his shoes were covered in red dust from the hill road. Surely, he had strolled along long distance. Soon, a woman rushed past asking if anyone had seen her missing chicken.
Baraka remembered hearing a faint cluck inside a closed basket near the man’s feet earlier, though he had thought it carried vegetables, Baraka said nothing until the man tried leaving before the busiest hour.
Then he quietly told the market chairperson, who politely asked the man to check the basket. Inside sat the silent chicken, surprisingly calm among cabbages.
