TOPIC 3 Curriculum Materials – Diploma in Education
Curriculum materials are all textual materials which the teacher uses when he/ she is planning his or her teaching. Examples of curriculum materials include syllabus, textbook, teacher’s guide and supplementary materials.
Syllabus is a list of topics and books that students should study in a particular subject at school or college. Or Is an outline or summary of a course of studies; programme of school studies.
Importance of Involving a Teacher in the Preparation or Translation of a Syllabus
i. It helps or enables the teacher to familiarize with the syllabus before its implementation
ii. The teacher is more conversant with the learners’ needs and abilities
iii. It enables the teacher to set appropriate objectives for learners
iv. It facilitates evaluation of learners and consequently improves the effectiveness of curriculum implementation
v. It enhances the teacher’s ability to prepare curriculum support materials
vi. The teacher develops ownership of the syllabus, thus improving the implementation process
Characteristics of a Textbook
✓ It is organized in chapters where each parts is subdivided into parts
✓ It contains numerous visual aids such as graphs, diagrams, photographs and cartoon
✓The topics are well sequenced
✓The book is written in a single readable style

Significance of Instructional Media

✓Help gain and hold the students’ attention
✓Help to solve certain language barrier problems
✓Help to clarify the relationships between material objects and concepts especially when relationships are presented visually
