Concept of teaching
Clark s and starr (1986) define teaching is an attempt to assist students in acquiring or changing some skills, knowledge, ideal, attitude or appreciation.
The broad definition of teaching might be ; the action of some one who is trying to assist others to reach their fullest potential in all aspects of development.
Therefore, teachers need to be concerned with all aspects of students development i.e physical, social, emotional and cognitive.
Operational Definition of Teaching
There are three common views of what constitutes teaching as;
- transmission,
- transaction, and
- transformation.
Conceptions on learning
Learning is a process of acquiring knowledge, skills or value by study, experience or instruction.
Learning becomes relatively permanent change in behavioral tendency as the result of practice.
Therefore, learning is all about acquisition, retention, practice and change in behavior.
Learning process
There are three features that constitutes learning.
1. Information to be learned i.e knowledge, skills etc
2. Means by which students are able to learn- conducive environment
3. A combination of information and cues that will arouse cognitive operations which are;
Stimulating-ability to activate information
Assembling-ability to create links or relationship between one information and another
Rehearsing- ability to maintain or sustain information through practice
Translating-ability to decode information, that is providing meaning to the information acquired
