JWTZ Overview

The history of security and defense work and activities in Tanzania began since the time of our ancestors. Many communities living in various areas of the country had traditional defense that involved every member of the community. Traditional defense was the basis of the security of all communities at that time. The weapons used by our ancestors were poor such as bows, spears, sickles, swords and axes as basic weapons to protect their communities. Each tribe had a way of preparing their youth to learn the use of weapons and later the youth were given the responsibility of protecting their communities.

The African continent underwent political, economic and social changes after the Industrial Revolution that occurred in Europe in the 19th century. The Berlin Conference held from 1884 to 1885 was followed by major changes in the political, economic and military domination of African countries. This was the beginning of many countries in Africa becoming subject to foreign armies.
