Example
1. Dorcas had a note of ten thousand shillings and she bought lkg of sugar at sh 1, 800. What was her change?
Her change was sh 8,200
2. Alice was given five thousand shillings not by her father. She bought the following 1 kg of salt at sh. 2,000
3. A pair of socks at sh 500 An exercise book at sh 500 What was her change?
Solution
In order to calculate the change, calculate the total expenses slie spent.
Sh
Change (balance) = 5,000 -3, 000 = 2, 000 sh.
EXERCISE
1. A boy gave a shopkeeper 10, 000 shillings not for an exercise book. Costing sh 8,500. How much balance did he receive?
2. Juma had sh 1, 000. He bought an orange for sh 150, and mango for sh 300. What was his change?
CALCULATION OF PROFIT MADE, BUYING AND SELLING PRICE
The following should be well known:
- Profit made = selling price – buying price
- Loss made = buying price – selling price
- Buying price = selling price +loss made
- Selling price = buying price – loss made OR
- Selling price = Buying price + profit made
- If the selling price is greater than buying price, the business has made profit (profit made)
- If the buying price is greater than the selling price, the business has made loss. (loss made)
