Word Problems (additions)

1. Japheth had 4, 960.cows, his father Masalu had 8, 548 cowy. How many cows did they have altogether?

3. In Ilola street there are 48, 560 boys and 35, 482 girls. What is the total number of boys and girls in the street?

5. St. Columbas Primary school has 589 boys and 238 girls. How many pupils are there altogether?

Horizontal subtraction with borrowing

(a) 39, 425 – 20, 956 = 18, 469

Subtract 6 from 5 in ones: it is impossible to subtract 6 from 5. Take 1 ten from 2 tens, added to 5 = 10 +5

Now, subtract 6 from 15 = 15 -6 =9

Subtract 5 from 1 in tens. It is not possible to subtract 5 from 1. Take 1 hundred from 4, it will 11 tens.

9-6 = 6

Subtract 9 from 3-in hundreds. It is not possible to subtract 9 from 3. Take 1 thousand from 9, it will be 13 hundreds.

13 -9 = 4.

Subtract 0 from 8-0 = 8

 Subtract 2 from 3 in ten thousands, 3- 2 1 Vertical subtraction with borrowing

Subtract 2 from 3 in ones = 3- 2= 1

Subtract 8 from 4 in tens; it is not possible to subtract 8 from 4 Take 1 hundred from 9 Jt will be 14 tens

14-8= 6

Subtract 6 from 9 =9 -6= 3

Subtract 9 from 5 in thousands, it is not possible. Take 1 ten thousand from 2 ten thousands. It will be 15 thousands

15 -6 =9.
