What is cytology?
Cytology is the exam of a single cell type, as often found in fluid specimens. It's mainly used to diagnose or screen for cancer.
It's also used to screen for fetal abnormalities, for pap smears, to diagnose infectious organisms, and in other screening and diagnostic areas.
The study of cells, their origin, structure, function and pathology. Discussion. Cytology is the branch of biology dealing with the morphology, structure, ultrastructure, life cycle, and pathology of cells.
What is a cytology test?
A cytology test is used to look closely at cells and body fluids. It may be helpful if a patient has cancer symptoms or is due for a cancer screening.
There's a wide range of cytology test procedures. A Pap smear, which collects cells from the cervix, is one example.
